About Salt Water Pool Systems

How Salt Chlorinators Work

Salt chlorinators (also called salt chlorine generators) convert dissolved salt into chlorine through electrolysis. The chlorine sanitizes your pool, then converts back to salt. This creates a continuous cycle, reducing the need to manually add chlorine.

Optimal Salt Levels

  • Standard Range: 2700-3400 ppm (parts per million)
  • Most Common Target: 3200 ppm
  • Too Low: Chlorinator won't produce enough chlorine
  • Too High: Can damage equipment and make water taste salty

Salt Loss & Maintenance

Salt doesn't evaporate or get consumed—it only leaves your pool through splashing, backwashing, or draining. You'll typically need to add salt only a few times per season. Always test before adding more salt.

Conversion from Traditional Chlorine

Converting to a salt system is straightforward: add the required salt, install the chlorinator, and balance your water chemistry. Salt water is gentler on skin and eyes compared to traditional chlorine pools.
