About Chlorine & Shock Treatments

Free Chlorine (FC)

Free chlorine is the active sanitizer in your pool. Maintain 1-3 ppm for daily use. Too low allows bacteria and algae growth. Too high causes skin/eye irritation and chemical smell.

Shock Treatment

Shocking raises chlorine to 10+ ppm temporarily to kill algae, bacteria, and break down contaminants. Shock at night, run pump overnight, test in morning. Wait until FC drops below 3 ppm before swimming.

Chlorine Types

  • Liquid Bleach: Fast-acting, no residue, degrades in sunlight
  • Cal-Hypo: Powerful shock treatment, raises calcium hardness
  • Dichlor: Stabilized, good for regular use, raises cyanuric acid
  • Trichlor: Slow-dissolving tablets, acidic, lowers pH
