⚠️ Critical Safety Rules

  • •Never mix chemicals together - Always add chemicals to water separately
  • •Never add water to acid - Always add acid to water ("Do what you oughta, add acid to water")
  • •Store chemicals separately - Keep acids away from chlorine products
  • •Wear protective equipment - Goggles and gloves are mandatory

🥽 Personal Protective Equipment

Required Equipment

  • Safety Goggles: Protect eyes from splashes and fumes
  • Chemical-Resistant Gloves: Nitrile or rubber gloves, not latex
  • Long Pants & Closed-Toe Shoes: Cover skin completely
  • Long-Sleeved Shirt: Protect arms from splashes

Optional But Recommended

  • Respirator Mask: When handling dusty products in enclosed spaces
  • Apron: Extra protection for your clothing

📦 Proper Storage

✅ DO

  • • Store in original containers with labels intact
  • • Keep in cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  • • Store acids on lower shelves (heavier, risk of spills)
  • • Keep chlorine products on higher shelves
  • • Lock storage area away from children and pets
  • • Keep chemicals off concrete floors (can corrode)
  • • Check containers regularly for leaks

❌ DON'T

  • • Store acids and chlorine products together
  • • Leave containers open or unsealed
  • • Store near gasoline, paint, or fertilizers
  • • Keep in direct sunlight or heat
  • • Store in humid areas (can cause reactions)
  • • Transfer to unmarked containers
  • • Stack heavy containers on top of each other

🧪 Safe Handling Procedures

Adding Liquid Chemicals

  1. 1Put on safety goggles and gloves
  2. 2Pour chemical into a bucket of pool water (never the reverse)
  3. 3Pour slowly to avoid splashing
  4. 4Walk around pool perimeter while pouring (for even distribution)
  5. 5Run pump for at least 1 hour to circulate

Adding Granular/Powder Chemicals

  1. 1Work in well-ventilated area (dust can be irritating)
  2. 2Pre-dissolve in bucket of water (if label allows)
  3. 3Pour slowly to avoid creating dust clouds
  4. 4Stir gently until dissolved
  5. 5Brush any undissolved product to speed dissolution

⚗️ Specific Chemical Hazards

Chlorine Products (Bleach, Cal-Hypo, Dichlor, Trichlor)▼

Hazards: Corrosive, can cause severe burns, toxic fumes when mixed with acids

Storage: Cool, dry place away from acids and organic materials

Incompatible With: Acids, ammonia, fertilizers, gasoline

Muriatic Acid (Hydrochloric Acid)▼

Hazards: Highly corrosive, burns skin on contact, toxic fumes

Storage: Separate from chlorine, in acid-resistant container

Incompatible With: Chlorine, bases, metals

Special Note: Always add acid to water, never water to acid

Soda Ash / Sodium Carbonate▼

Hazards: Alkaline, irritates eyes and skin, dust irritates lungs

Storage: Keep dry (absorbs moisture from air)

Incompatible With: Acids

Calcium Hypochlorite (Cal-Hypo)▼

Hazards: Strong oxidizer, combustible when wet, explosive when mixed with organic matter

Storage: Keep absolutely dry, separate from all other chemicals

Incompatible With: Acids, organic materials, nitrogen compounds

Special Note: Most dangerous pool chemical - handle with extreme care

🚨 Emergency Procedures

Skin Contact

  1. 1. Remove contaminated clothing immediately
  2. 2. Flush with large amounts of water for 15 minutes
  3. 3. Do NOT use neutralizing agents
  4. 4. Seek medical attention for severe burns

Eye Contact

  1. 1. Immediately flush with water for 15 minutes
  2. 2. Hold eyelids open while flushing
  3. 3. Remove contact lenses if present
  4. 4. Seek immediate medical attention

Inhalation

  1. 1. Move person to fresh air immediately
  2. 2. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen
  3. 3. Keep person calm and still
  4. 4. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist

Ingestion

  1. 1. Do NOT induce vomiting
  2. 2. Rinse mouth with water
  3. 3. Give small amounts of water to drink
  4. 4. Call Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222

Call 911 immediately if: Difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, severe burns, or large chemical exposure

💧 Handling Chemical Spills

Small Spills (Less than 1 pound/pint)

  1. 1Ventilate area immediately
  2. 2Put on full protective equipment
  3. 3Cover spill with absorbent material (sand, cat litter, baking soda)
  4. 4Sweep up carefully into plastic bag
  5. 5Dispose as hazardous waste (check local regulations)

Large Spills: Evacuate area immediately and call your local fire department's hazmat team. Do not attempt to clean up large chemical spills yourself.
